Opportunities

/Positions are available for talented students to pursue postgraduate degrees, namely Master’s of Engineering (ME) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

There are currently 1 funded PhD positions and 2 funded masters projects supervised by Dr Justine Hui. Click here for more information.

The Communication Acoustics Lab (CAL) is seeking motivated students with strong academic background having interests in the field of digital signal processing, acoustics, the science of hearing, linguistics and psychology. Applicants should hold or be studying towards relevant engineering/science degrees such as Electrical/Electronics/Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering and Computer Science. Applications from non-engineering (e.g. psychology and linguistics) may also be considered for some multi-disciplinary research projects. Most research conducted at the CAL require excellent mathematical, programming and analytic skills.

Our research areas can be found on the Research page.  Specific research projects currently available are advertised on Findathesis.

NB: Unlike many other laboratories working in similar fields, CAL is NOT focusing on machine learning (especially more recent technologies such as deep neural network) focused approaches but is rather interested in integrating mechanism of human auditory perception/linguistics/psychology of hearing into digital signal processing technologies. While some of our students interested in machine learning are exploring those technologies as a tool (by typically with supports from their co-supervisor or external collaborator(s)), the staff members at CAL are not specialised in these fields to make contributions to projects where machine learning lies in their main centre.

 Application process
